Skills

- apply models and frameworks for effective
cross-cultural communication;
- discern when, what, and how to communicate with patients on sensitive
areas of inquiry;
- resolve and/or mediate conflict rooted in bias, prejudice, or discrimination;
- plan and implement a process of inquiry for the community using
a variety of strategies (key community informant, cultural
brokers, focus groups, advisory boards, task forces and committees, and
participatory action research);
- assess the level of health literacy by applying one of the health
literacy models and by adapting communications with patients
accordingly;
- communicate and negotiate treatment options with patients and their
families;
- work effectively with foreign and sign language interpreters;
- partner with patients to evaluate the efficacy of translated documents
and signage;
- partner with patients to evaluate the quality and effectiveness
of interpretation services;
- support and enable patients and their families to advocate on their
own behalf when they experience discrimination in health and
mental health care settings; and
- coach and/or mentor colleagues and staff to:
- implement a process of inquiry,
- address bias, and
- collaborate with communities.
